Project Description
The Veterna's Park Salem Retaining Wall Rehabilitation project has been initiated to address the deteriorated condition of the existing gabion retaining wall located along the bank of the Irvine Creek within Veterans Park. Through detailed design iterations, the solution to addressing the existing wall is a creek bank naturalization approach.
The existing wall will be removed and in place of the wall, the Irvine Creek bank will be sloped and naturalized. The main aspects of this project will include:
- Relocate existing memorial trees, bench and stone.
- Removal of the existing gabion retaining wall.
- Re-grade the existing creek bank with natural stone, soil and vegetation.
- Provide additional trees, planting, fencing and benches.
- Create a by-pass channel for creek flows through the existing sediment projection (i.e., the pile of rock extending into the creek) in the creek just south of the existing wall.
- Construct a water course access point.
This style of construction will provide a naturalized yet stable solution.
Construction is planned to start in late spring/summer 2025. During construction, access to the lower part of Veteran's Park will be limited.
