Construction Update - September 19, 2025
The remaining sodding and tree planting for the Veteran’s Park project will be delayed until mid-October. Due to the recent dry, warmer weather, waiting until October will ensure better conditions for the remaining plant material. The benches will be the last items to be installed.
Project Description
The Veteran's Park Salem Retaining Wall Rehabilitation project has been initiated to address the deteriorated condition of the existing gabion retaining wall located along the bank of the Irvine Creek within Veterans Park. Through detailed design iterations, the solution to addressing the existing wall is a creek bank naturalization approach.
The existing wall will be removed and in place of the wall, the Irvine Creek bank will be sloped and naturalized. The main aspects of this project will include:
- Relocate existing memorial trees, bench and stone.
- Removal of the existing gabion retaining wall.
- Re-grade the existing creek bank with natural stone, soil and vegetation.
- Provide additional trees, planting, fencing and benches.
- Create a by-pass channel for creek flows through the existing sediment projection (i.e., the pile of rock extending into the creek) in the creek just south of the existing wall.
- Construct a water course access point.
This style of construction will provide a naturalized yet stable solution.
Construction is planned to start in late spring/summer 2025. During construction, access to the lower part of Veteran's Park will be limited.

Project Schedule
Construction for this project is set to begin on August 5, 2025 and be completed by the end of August. The General Contractor for this project is R&M Construction from Acton, Ontario.
NOTE: The remaining sodding and tree planting for the Veterans' Park project will be postponed until mid-October. With the recent dry, warmer weather, holding off until October will provide better conditions for success with the remaining plant material. The benches will be the final items that get installed.
